Velrae
Method

A food scanner that learns you — your conditions, your patterns, your body.

Named for my mom, Rae.

Let's get to know you

Pick anything that applies. We'll personalize every scan for you. This stays on your phone — nothing is sent anywhere.

This is what appears on any health-report PDF you share with a doctor or dietitian. Optional now — you can add or change it later in Settings.

Your daily summary is written right on your phone — your health details never leave your device. Turn this on for a richer, AI-written version with specific food swaps; that sends the day's food and how you felt to our AI to write it (not stored there). Change it anytime in Settings.

Pick conditions, life stages, or eating patterns — whatever describes the reality you bring to food. Each one you tap shapes how a food gets graded for you specifically. White bread reads differently for celiac than for someone on Mediterranean — the grade respects the difference.

No condition? Tap Just eating healthier above and you're good.

Pick up to 5. These nudge the grade toward foods that support what you're after — heart health, lower inflammation, build muscle, support metabolic health, brain health. Your conditions above always outrank a goal if the two disagree.

Tap any you'd like to keep an eye on — you can change these anytime on the Today screen. Velrae just holds the journal; your doctor reads the numbers.

ft in — powers your BMI

Optional — skip and add later anytime in Settings → Numbers, or right on the Today screen.

Velrae can grade skincare, haircare, and makeup for the skin, too — want to set that up now?

Profiles

Switch between people. Each has their own conditions, history, and triggers.

What applies to you

Conditions, life stages, eating patterns — anything that should shape how a food gets graded for this profile.

Allergens to flag

Pick any food allergens you want flagged. On every scan, Velrae warns you if the label lists one. It reads the label only — always check the actual package, and it can't catch cross-contamination ("may contain"). It can't tell you a product is safe.

My goals

What are you working toward, beyond any diagnosis? Goals are gentler than conditions — they nudge ingredients toward foods that support what you're after, but a condition always wins if the two disagree.

Diets I follow

Pick any eating pattern you actively follow. We use these to tag scans and personalize alternatives.

Numbers I track

Choose which numbers to follow — blood pressure, blood glucose, or weight — right on the Today screen, where you log them. Tap a number to turn it on; some turn on automatically based on your conditions.

We hold the journal — we never tell you what the numbers mean. Bring them to the person who can: your doctor.

Health report (PDF)

Generate a clinical-style PDF with your symptom history, scan summary, and identified triggers — bring it to your next doctor visit.

Theme

Auto follows your phone's day/night setting. Or lock it to Light or Dark.

Pick the color that feels like you.

Accessibility

When you scan a barcode, show a small "Per 100g" strip below the grade with sodium, protein, sugar, and saturated fat — pulled from the product label. We never count, total, or judge these numbers — just surface what's on the package. Off if you'd rather not see them.

On the Day Overview screen, show a short read of why your day looked the way it did. Off if you'd rather just see the grades and lists without the narrative.

By default your daily summary is written right on your phone — nothing leaves your device. Turn this on for a richer, AI-written version with specific food swaps; that sends the day's food and how you felt to our AI service to write it (it isn't stored there). You can turn it off anytime.

How the grades work

Every food gets a number from 0 to 100 and a letter grade A–F. The grade is personalized to your conditions — same food can grade differently for different people.

A
85–100 · Go for it.
Clean for you. Add to your safe list.
B
70–84 · Looks pretty good.
A couple of minor things to keep an eye on.
C
55–69 · Sure, occasionally.
Cleaner options exist if you want one.
D
35–54 · Maybe skip this one.
Several ingredients worth avoiding for you.
F
0–34 · Not for you.
Multiple high-concern ingredients here.

Why two people get different grades: White bread might grade C for IBS but F for celiac. The grade respects your specific conditions.

Why some ingredients show as "couldn't recognize": they weren't in our database — they didn't help or hurt the grade. We add more every update.

Why the colors never change with themes: picking a different look changes the menus, not the grade colors. Green always means "good for you."

How Personal Care grades work

Shampoo, lotion, sunscreen, and makeup get a Skin Score from 0 to 10 — a purple square instead of the food circle, so you always know which kind of scan you're looking at. Higher is better for your skin, weighed against your conditions.

7–10
A good match for you.
Nothing here flags for your skin.
4–6
Okay — use with care.
A few ingredients worth watching for you.
0–3
Better skipped.
Several ingredients flagged for your skin.

Same idea as food: every ingredient is tappable for what it is and why it's flagged, and anything we don't recognize is researched on the spot and folded into your score.

About

Velrae Method is a privacy-first food scanner built for people living with autoimmune and chronic conditions. Every score runs on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere — except the optional OpenFoodFacts lookup when you scan a UPC barcode.

Named for my mom, Rae — who deserves a food scanner that actually knows her.

Questions or feedback? velraemethod@gmail.com

Informational only. Not medical advice. Always work with your doctor or dietitian for dietary decisions related to your condition.

For adults 18 and older. Adults may create profiles to track nutrition for family members of any age, including children. The adult account holder is always responsible for managing those profiles.

When this is on, we send anonymous scan data — the ingredients we read and the grade — tagged with an anonymous device id, no name and none of your conditions. It helps the label reader and the grades get better for everyone. Turn it off any time; the app works exactly the same. (Reporting a bad scan still works when this is off — that stays your choice each time.)

Privacy Policy

The short version: Velrae has no accounts and no logins. Your scans, meals, symptoms, profiles, and reports stay on your phone — we never see them, and we never sell your data. Your conditions stay on your phone too, with one exception we spell out below.

Stays on your device

Everything you track — conditions, goals, scan history, meal logs, check-ins, patterns, lists, and reports. Erase it all any time with Wipe all data below. We can't see it or recover it. One exception: when we ask our AI to identify an ingredient we don't recognise, the names of your conditions go along with the question — see below.

Leaves your device only when you use these

We never collect

Your symptom history, location, contacts, or camera roll. No ads, no cross-site tracking, no user database. We never build a profile of you or link what you scan to who you are.

Questions? velraemethod@gmail.com · the complete policy is always at app.velraemethod.com/privacy.

Where these numbers come from

We compare what's on the label to the FDA Daily Values for adults and children 4+. These are general baselines — your doctor or dietitian may give you different targets for your conditions.

Back up your data

Everything lives on your phone — we don't keep a copy. Email yourself a backup any time. The file is encrypted and locked to your email, so only you can open it. If you reinstall the app or get a new phone, restore the backup with the same email to bring your history back.

Restore from a backup

Already have a Velrae backup file? Pick it from Files, iCloud Drive, or an email attachment to bring your history back. You'll unlock it with the same email the backup was saved under.

Scan log Developer

Records every scan (raw OCR text, your edits, what matched). Useful for iterating on OCR accuracy — export and share with the developer.
